hands-on science

Curiosity is part of human nature. One of the first questions children learn to ask is “Why?” Even as adults, we continue to ask ourselves questions. Using empirical methods, psychologists harness this universal curiosity to collect and interpret research data in order to better understand and solve some of society’s most difficult problems.

It is difficult, if not impossible, to imagine any area of life in which psychology does not play a role. Psychologists apply the scientific method—they formulate a question, propose a theory, and then conduct rigorous laboratory or field experiments to test the hypothesis. Psychologists apply the knowledge gained through research to develop evidence-based strategies that solve problems and improve lives.

As a result, the science of psychology reveals new and better ways for people to exist and thrive in a complex world.

Psychology is a diverse field. Psychologists conduct basic and applied research, advise communities and organizations, diagnose and treat people, and teach future psychologists as well as those pursuing other disciplines. They assess intelligence and personality.

Many psychologists work as healthcare providers. They assess behavior, mental functioning, and well-being. Other psychologists study how people interact with one another and with machines, and work to improve these relationships.

The application of psychological research can reduce the economic burden of disease on the government and society, as people learn to make decisions that improve their health and well-being. Advances in educational assessment help students with learning difficulties. Psychological science helps educators understand how children think, process information, and remember, thereby contributing to the development of effective teaching methods. Psychological science contributes to the justice system by helping courts understand the minds of offenders, evidence, and the limitations of certain types of evidence or testimony.

The field of psychology is ubiquitous. Psychologists work at some of the country’s best-known companies and organizations. From Google, Boeing, and NASA to the federal government, national health organizations, and research groups, all the way to Cirque du Soleil, Disney, and NASCAR—psychologists play a vital role in all of them.
